After High School [Institutes?]?

Question:I was looking into going to the Culinary Institute of New Orleans, but I'm not sure if my parents or myself will be able to afford it. I'm not sure how much it cost to attend, but I'm sure it would cost a pretty penny.

I would love to hear from people who went to institutes instead of a college because I would love to just learn about one thing. Instead of taking classes that I really don't need. Basically I want hands on experience.

I'm stuck on researching the different types of schools I can attend.
I'm interested in cooking, interior and exterior design, sewing, basically I love working with my hands.

I'm not sure if you can help me, but if you aren't clear of what I'm looking for, read this.

I want to research the different types of schools I can attend instead of going to college. I want hands on experience and I want to get right into a certain major I guess you can say.

I know its a bit unclear, but please try!
I'm stuck in a rut on researching.
