Any tips on starting a homeschool club?

Question:I have decided to start a homeschool lego club. Basically this is a free way for some of the homeschoolers to meet in the air conditioning (yay FL!) and have something creative to do. I have interested families who say they will come. What can I do to get more families involved and how can I get them to stay involved?

Answers:
We started a homeschool group 5 years ago with 3 families, we now have 25 families and more coming all the time. Start with what you have, and word will spread.

I'd recommend posting a notice in the library (with permission). You can also post info about the club on Yahoogroups for your area (many homeschooling loops out there!).

How to get them to stay involved - well, if it is really intended just as a lego club, it will come and go. If you want to turn it into a homeschool group with meetings etc. then interest will depend on how you set up the structure. I am happy to send you our group's handbook so you can see how we do things. Just email me.

Have fun!
Start out with a Yahoo group. That will inform people who are interested about the meeting times. Seek out a local homeschool support group and make sure they know about the Yahoo group. Also, hang fliers, put adds in newspapers, generally promote your group.
Are you familiar with Lego Magazine...they print a section for home photo's. Invite friends of the students one week and the next.maybe a public official then the Mayor with the media...your imagination is the limit. Do it at the park...at the mall...in the court house. Good Luck and I hope this helps.
Our homeschool group does this as well. The best way to get the word out is to email invites to the leaders of local homeschool support groups. Once they come and see their kids having a blast, believe me, they'll come :-)
1. Start a yahoo group for your club with a good description of what you currently offer and what you'd like to see it become.

2. Advertise the heck out of it. Be sure you are only advertising in lists and at times that are allowed otherwise it becomes annoyinig spam and a bad public relations hurdle you have to cross.

3. Network with other homeschoolers and homeschool groups with lego programs or looking to start or join one in Florida - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lego-homes...

4. How to get folks involved - make it worth while for them to come back! Maybe at the first meeting have a questionaire or comment card that they can fill out for how to improve it, what they are seeking etc. There are many ways to do lego programs in a homeschooling atmosphere.

5. Plan for growth - we started our groups lego program 2 years ago in earnest and this is where we are now - http://www.hcecf.net/brickschoolerslegor...
One of the home school families here started one, and did as you, found a place that was large enough, and free.
They meet twice a month.
The fee/dues were X amount of Lego's so they had a certain amount of Lego's to start with. They also got donations from businesses, and put their creations on display in libraries, and other places.
Most if not all ordered the free Lego magazine for idea's (2year free subscription) http://www.lego.com/en-us/default.aspx...

To keep parents involved they had a meeting, and discussed who would get donations of Lego's, where to put the creation on display, maybe enter some contests, enter yearly fairs, or organize a trip to lego land.

They started out small, the only real advertisement was word of mouth, and the window displays in the library really helped to generate interest in the club.

Good Luck, and have fun.
