Are trees more suceptible to drought in full sunlight or in shaded woods?

What is the experimental control, ind/dep variable, and timing/reproductibility of the experiment?

trees are more susceptible to drought in full sunlight.
experimental control: trees grown in normal conditions (i.e. equal amounts of shade and sun)
Independent variable: time (or range of days / weeks / months / however long it takes to complete the experiment and observe the tree's adaptation to its environment)
dependent variable: growth of tree or rate of productivity in a drought-ish environment and a shaded environment.
