Answers:
Use double quotes around the entire passage and single quotes for Tam Lin's spoken section within the quote. It ends up looking like three quote marks at the beginning, but it's correct. It will look like this.

"'You see, lad, I'm what you call a mercenary,' said Tam Lin the the tilting voice Matt had come to love" (Author's last name 264).

This is based on MLA format (author's name is parenthesis). It's probably the appropriate style for any essay in which you'd quote fiction.

Note that the period comes after the parenthesis. It should not be inside of the quote.
that's right as far as I know!
"'You see, lad, I'm what you call a cercenary,' said Tam Lin in the tilting voice Matt had comed to love" p 264.

I'm pretty sure that thats right.
"You see lad, I'm what you call a mercenary",said Tam Lin, in the tilting voice Matt had come to love.
" 'You see lad, I'm what you call a mercenary,' said Tam Lin in the tilting voice Matt had come to love."

I'm pretty sure thats how you do it. If you have someone saying something inside a quote you put an apostrephy (sp? sorry) in place of quotation marks because you already have quotation marks for the whole quote.
"'You see, lad, I'm what you call a mercenary.' said Tam Lin in the tilting voice Matt had comed to love." (last name of author, p. 264)
"'You see, lad, I'm what you call a mercenary,' said Tam Lin in the tilting voice Matt had come to love." pg. 264
' "You see, lad, I'm what you call a mercenary," said Tam Lin in the tilting voice Matt had comed to love.' (p. 264).
