Can someone please explain what this quote means: "The human comedy begins with a vertical smile."?

Question:This quote was written by Richard Condon in his 1971 book, the "Vertical Smile." Please explain this quote in as much detail as possible. Thanks.

the only time I have heard the term "vertical smile" used it was referring to someone being mooned. as in the crack was the vertical smile
Probably has to do with an allusion to how a joke comes from the "***". The joke comes from someone who makes jokes, as in an ***.
Condon thought up the title, and no one will ever slip a better description of the exterior aspect of the human female sexual apparatus into the Library of Congress Catalog.
