Best way of planing a gap year?

Question:Hey, I just graduated from high-school and instead of going straight to uni, I want to take a gap-year.
I really would like to do volunteer work in Afrika and maybe in Asia. Teaching, working in an orphanage , it doesn't really matter as long as I can work with people and do something usefull. Does anyone know some organisations/ other ways to organise a gap year.
I really would like to hear your own experiences! The things you likes the most and the thing you have to be carefull about.

Oh I have one slight prob, I'm still 17 and some organisations only help you if you are already 18.

Take a look at Transitions Abroad magazine. There is a lot of information on work, study and travel abroad.
