A 16/17 year old would be in 1st or 2nd grade in high school . If you think school life in Japan is fun, think again;) School starts at 8.30a.m. You will probably live quite a distance away (around 30 minutes) so you have to leave early. You have to be in class when the bell rings (not a second later- really). School ends at about 1515 after which you may have to clean the classroom (you will take turns). After that, most Japanese students have clubs til 1800-1930 at least 2 days a week (for sports clubs it's 7 days a week).
You will go out with Japanese friends maybe once a week and do things like take purikura and karaoke.
I'm not saying that school life is not interesting for a foreigner but. it's not going to be constant partying or full of fun. The Japanese take school life seriously.
They would be in either Class 1 (9th Grade) or Class 2(10th Grade). And I hear it's much nicer to live there then here in America, which is why I want to do a foriegn exchange program there.
