the more you read quality literature the more a sense of proper grammer becomes internalized.
Use spell check, but not exclusively.
Finish your essays the night or two before they're due so you can "sleep on it," the edit the next day then print. That tip has generated a bunch of "As" for me because when I've just finished an essay or report I'm too close to it to see errors. In the workworld I still do that. Or have a friend edit and you return the favor for them.
In addition, the "Grammar Girl" podcast is effective and entertaining.
Well, you have to know the rules. I suggest getting a handbook.
